Allegan General Hospital

It is never a pleasant experience to have to visit an Emergency Room, however my recent visit to the Allegan General Hospital E.R. was a prompt, professional one and I am very thankful for their care. When I was informed of the procedures which would be required to assess my circumstances, I was immediately estimating how long I would be waiting for all of it. I am pleased to say that my expectations were greatly exceeded and the whole visit was much shorter than I ever would have guessed. All of the staff that I encountered were kind, compassionate, and very professional. I certainly hope that I never have need of their services again, but I am glad to know that they are there.

We had a great experience here today. The ER nurse Sierra was really helpful, and the staff was friendly! The doctors were all awesome!

I was taken here after a severe car crash and I was in extreme pain, I could not move because of the pain I was having in my back and I could hardly breathe. It took the nurse 20 minutes just to check on me and then she said I had to get up and go give a urine sample, before I could have any pain meds what??? I could not move and refused to try, they finally did xrays...my back was broke part of my disc was pulverized, they finally gave me some medication. Good thing I refused to get up or I could have become paralyzed from the chest down. I should have just told the ambulance to take me to a real hospital in Grand Rapids because that is where I ended up having to go anyway after spending 6 hours in Allegan.

If you care about your health do not come here. If you care about your loved ones make sure they do not come here as well.

It seems that men and women receive different care. I was at this ER about 3 months ago with what I believed was pnemonia. My symptoms were a low grade fever, severe chest pressure, and coughing up fluid. I was told it's viral and there was nothing that could be done. Well, I brought my boyfriend to the ER last night with those exact same symptoms. They took him seriously, did chest x-rays, confirmed he had pnemonia and put him on antibiotics. He received great care (mainly from the male nurse). Me on the other hand, I was blown off again. I asked the doctor (who barely seemed to have time for us) if I should be concerned because pnemonia is so contagious, I work with kids, and I have been having a chesty cough and pressure. Both of these symptoms mimic how my boyfriend's pnemonia started. The doctor told me, "what he describes is pnemonia. Yours sounds viral". I asked if I could receive antibiotics to prevent being in my boyfriends situation. He said yes. At discharge, I asked the nurse if he needed my information for the prescription for me. He said there wasn't a prescription for me and that I had to go to my doctor and tell him "you have a cough and your boyfriend has pnemonia". Why would the doctor tell me he was going to and not keep his word? Wasn't I already at the doctors, isn't it their job to care for everyone? Anyway, if you want to feel cared for when you're not feeling well and your a woman, you may not want to come here. Apparently, only men can be taken seriously.
