I visited the ER at my local hospital, and they discovered thru a CT scan that I had a ping pong sized gallstone. The Dr in the ER sent me directly to Baptist South after speaking with the on call surgeon there. I arrived at Baptist South around 11am. They had my bed waiting on me. I was taken to a holding area where I would spend the next several hours. I was prepped for surgery and was told to not eat or drink because I would be having the surgery to remove my gallbladder shortly. They came in and did an ultrasound of my gallbladder and saw the huge stone, confirming everything that my hospital had already told them. I waited and waited........finally, late yesterday evening a CRNP came to where I was and informed me that the surgeon had decided not to do my surgery yesterday. Wait...what. I have spent literally all day in this bed at this hospital and have been told all day that I am next on the list. She told me that the surgeon said to just follow up with him in 4-5 days to see when he could do the surgery. I politely told her that I would not be following up with him, and that she could let him know I will be finding another surgeon. But, that’s not all.
You would not believe the numerous HIPPA violations that happened during my stay at Baptist South. While in the holding area, a nurse was on the phone with someone talking about a patient down the hall from me. I can tell you her name and her age.....I can also tell you half of her medical history. I know that this should not be happening. Doctors and nurses should not be discussing any patient or their medical history where other patients or people can hear them. This happened numerous times throughout the day while I was in my room.
I am in absolute awe at how unprofessional Baptist South handled me and other patient’s privacy during my stay.
