Rex Hospital

What has happened to the Rex emergency room?!? Thank goodness I have not been here in years - I now go to Wake Med North when I can but tonight I was worried about a DVT in my leg and Wake North did not have a Doppler on the weekends so I called Rex and they have one. I’ve sat in the ER now for an hour and 15 minutes. It’s filthy. Food all over the floor. People throwing up in the main waiting room into bags and then the people working at the reception desk telling the family of the guy throwing up to just dump his bags in the open trash can by the reception desk. Those bags have been sitting in that trash can for an hour and nobody cares. No sign of a custodian anywhere. It’s so sad. Rex has invested so much money to build their campus up but the ER is completely neglected.

Don't get me wrong - the medical folks are great. But, their record keeping is decrepit. Lost my surgery notes from nine years ago. Inexcusable and unprofessional. ***Update - They weren't lost. They were archived off-site. Rex found the files and got them to my doctor post haste and I am good to go. I have updated my rating to where it should be, Thank-you, Rex.

Update: The billing supervisor ended up working with me and attempted to send the bill to the insurance company. When that did’t work, he reached out to patient relations and was granted permission to write off the charge. I’m glad that happened, but it was still a very long process and the hospital has some serious adjustments to make in their billing processes overall. It put unneccessary stress on me and my pregnant wife. This is why I am not upgrading the review to 5 stars, but only 4. Either way, I’m just happy this billing situation is settled. Thank you Kevin, as you seemed to have been the only one attempting to fix the issue. Avoid at all cost! UNC has a great name but that’s about the extend of it. These people will not abide by their own billing contracts!!! My wife is a patient with their midwifery. They referred us to the genetic counselors due to an ultrasound result and stated that this is the next step in the procedure. This turned into a billing nightmare and showed us that UNC DOES NOT care about their pregnant patients. UNC refuses to send the genetic counseling procedure to our insurance company!!! Their patient relations rep Cordelia then had the nerves to tell us that it is our responsibility to know what our insurance covers and that it’s basically our fault, completely igoring the fact that UNC DIDN’T EVEN SEND IT TO OUR INSURANCE!!! How would they even know if it’s covered if they don’t send it??????????? She then said we had agreed to the charges by signature so I asked for a copy of that statement. The statement actually says that we agree to pay our portion of the cost, whatever the insurance doesn’t pay. It also stated that we agree that our insurance pays UNC directly. Basically, it says that UNC will send it to our insurance, which they refuse! Anyway, the billing department supervisor Kevin then (after weeks of talking to him) said that he will have it sent to our insurance. Well, that was a lie because we are still receiving the bill in the mail, minus a 40% discount for being “uninsured!?!?” These people are liars, scammers, and absolutely pathetic!!!

Although the surgeon and his team were great, staying here has been a disaster for my loved one. The air conditioner here does not work. The food is seriously lacking in nutrition and the staff changes make it so that there are large gaps of time you can’t get anyone to help. The bathroom had pubic hair all over on the floor and the towels and such were full of pills... paper towels would have been softer. This is our third bad experience here over the course of five years. Just go to Wake Med. Demand that your surgeon perform there or switch doctors.

Worst hospital experience ever. They don’t care about the people that come in. Try to talk to them after the fact about it and they make excuses. If you want help go to another hospital where they actually treat you. When I was in triage I was very close to passing out and was green (according to triage nurse). I told them on multiple occasions I needed water and was told no because there was a high chance I need surgery. Yet I was put back in the waiting room in excruciating pain and forgotten about. I ended up leaving so I was never seen. Yet I had a large bill come in the mail. This place is a joke. Save yourself a headache and go elsewhere.
